  • The opening day at Radicle School of Herbalism launches a 6-month intensive program focused on energetic herbalism. Chris Radicle, the founder, will introduce the school's integrative approach, blending traditional wisdom with modern practices, and outline the curriculum emphasizing community engagement and practical experience.

Students will share their backgrounds and goals, fostering a supportive learning environment. Chris will detail his herbalism journey and vision for the school, emphasizing foundational knowledge in herbal medicine, plant energetics, and the role of herbalists in community health.

The program's long-term goals aim to build a community of ethical herbalists ready for eclectic future opportunities, including community clinics and workshops. The day underscores the importance of community involvement, encouraging students to contribute positively to the field of herbal medicine. This introduction commits to a journey of growth and community building within herbalism.

  • History of herbalism, spotlighting indigenous wisdom as the cornerstone. This week's focus is on exploring various cultural systems of plant medicine, including Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and Western traditions, emphasizing their connections to nature and unique elemental and energetic models.

The exploration serves as a path to introducing Energetic Herbalism, laying the foundation for understanding the intricate relationship between plants, their energetic properties, and healing practices. This comprehensive overview aims to deepen students' appreciation for the diverse traditions of herbal medicine and their underlying principles, setting the stage for integrating these concepts into practice.

  • Foundational concepts of energetic herbalism, exploring the principles of taste and thermal properties (such as cooling or warming effects) that categorize herbs. Through engaging in organoleptic exercises, students will develop their sensory evaluation skills, learning to discern and describe the energetic attributes of herbs through taste and touch.

This hands-on approach is complemented by an introduction to the Elemental theories from various cultural perspectives, including Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) elements, enriching students’ understanding of the natural world and its correlation with human health.

  • Materia medica is structured around the categorization of herbs within herbal energetics, with an examination of the taste of plants—acrid, astringent, bitter, pungent, salty, slimy, sour, spicy, sweet—as the foundational aspect of understanding herbal energetics. This initial focus sets the stage for exploring other crucial categories such as the nature of herbs (cool, warm, moist, dry), along with their qualities and actions.

This systematic approach aims to enhance students' proficiency in tasting, selecting, and applying herbs based on their energetic profiles, fostering a holistic understanding of herbal medicine. Students are encouraged to integrate these concepts, progressing from taste to nature, qualities, and actions, to form a comprehensive view of herbal energetics and its practical applications.

  • field trip to a local park or community garden, kicking off our materia medica series with a focus on practical botany and herbal energetics. This experience bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, allowing students to directly interact with plants in their natural settings.

Through observation, touch, and taste, students will apply botany principles to identify plants and explore their roles in the ecosystem, enhancing their understanding of herbal energetics. Organoleptic activities will deepen this connection, linking sensory experiences with the energetic profiles of herbs.

  • The vital topic of herbal safety, integrating learnings from plant identification and herbal energetics. This session aims to enhance students’ comprehension of safely using herbs, drawing on the energetic properties observed during the field experience.

The focus is on applying herbal safety principles thoughtfully, considering the unique energetics of each plant. This nuanced approach is vital for understanding how different herbs may interact with individual constitutions and conditions.

Key discussions will cover recognizing contraindications, identifying possible side effects, and determining appropriate dosages. This foundational knowledge prepares students for the advanced application of herbal energetics in remedy formulation and client assessment, emphasizing practical and safe herbal practice.

  • Applying herbal energetics for individual assessments. This crucial segment teaches students to correlate the unique energetic properties of herbs with the signs and symptoms presented by individuals, aiming to refine diagnostic abilities.

The session expands to encompass constitutional models from Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and Vitalism, offering a holistic view for assessing personal health needs. Integrating these models with herbal energetics enables the creation of tailored herbal strategies.

An essential class for understanding a person’s unique constitution, and preparing students to devise personalized herbal treatments. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptoms and constitutional dynamics, significantly enhancing students’ herbalism skills.

  • Building on the initial observation of signs and symptoms, advancing to introduce the concepts of physiological and pathological patterns in individuals. This involves the categorization of observed signs and symptoms into broader groups of patterns, essential for a comprehensive understanding of a person's health status.

The aim is to equip students with the ability to recognize and interpret these complex patterns, facilitating a deeper insight into the underlying imbalances that contribute to health issues. This approach enhances the practitioner's capacity to devise more effective, personalized herbal strategies, grounded in a nuanced understanding of energetic herbalism.

  • A deeper dive into the materia medica, broadening the focus to include a comprehensive examination of herbs in relation to physiological and constitutional patterns. This segment of the curriculum aims to connect the energetics of herbs with the intricacies of the human body and individual constitutions, providing a nuanced approach to herbal therapy.

During this class, students are guided to explore the relationship between herbs and various physiological processes. The class also introduces the principles from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other systems that classify individuals according to specific constitutional types. This approach enriches students' ability to select herbs not just based on their general properties but also on how they match an individual's unique constitutional profile.

  • Moving from materia medica and bridging the foundational understanding of constitutional types, and physiological and pathological patterns with a more in-depth into human physiology. This integration aims to deepen students' comprehension of the overall health and disease processes.

By grounding herbal energetics in a holistic understanding of anatomical structure and physiological function, students can appreciate the interplay between an individual's energetic constitution and their physical condition. Materia medica will be interweaved in this class based on the organ system.

  • In this series, we explore essential body systems and how herbalism can support their health and function. Starting with the digestive and respiratory systems, students learn about nutrient absorption, gas exchange, and herbal remedies for common ailments. The cardiovascular and lymphatic systems are next, emphasizing circulation, immune function, and detoxification. The urinary and reproductive systems follow, with a focus on waste elimination, hormonal balance, and reproductive health.

The series progresses to the muscular and skeletal systems, covering structure, support, mobility, and discomfort relief. The integumentary, immune, and nervous systems are examined for their protective, defensive, and communicative roles, along with herbal strategies for optimal health. The peripheral nervous and endocrine systems' exploration reveals their importance in information transmission and hormonal regulation. The series concludes with the endocannabinoid system, highlighting its role in physiological balance and how herbs can influence its activity for overall wellness.

Each section introduces basic assessment techniques and relevant materia medica, providing a comprehensive approach to holistic herbal support for these critical areas.

  • Herbal formulations, focusing on the application of herbal energetics in the art of formulation, introduce students to the wide array of qualities and actions of herbs. The class starts with an exploration of primary herbal actions, guiding students to understand how different herbs can be chosen and utilized in formulation strategies.

The class then transitions to the principles of herbal formulation, teaching students to thoughtfully combine herbs, taking into account synergy, dosages, and potential herb interactions, to ensure both safety and efficacy. Students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of herbal actions and the foundational skills necessary for crafting personalized herbal formulas.

  • Energetic Nutrition blends the principles of herbal energetics with dietary practices to support holistic health. This class explores how foods, like herbs, possess energetic qualities that can influence the body's balance and well-being.

Students will learn to assess nutritional needs through the lens of energetics, identifying which foods can harmonize with individual constitutions and health conditions. Practical guidance on integrating energetic nutrition into herbal therapy plans will equip students to offer comprehensive wellness strategies that encompass both diet and herbal support.
